Daisy the Duckling

Hello crafters!

With a little boy just over one, we have been singing a lot of nursery rhymes in our house, and one of our favourites is ‘Five little ducks’. I have decided to make my own little duck to sing along with, meet Daisy the duckling!

Materials
• DK or 8ply yarn in orange and grey (I like to use Ricorumi DK or Paintbox cotton DK*)
• 3.5 mm crochet hook*
• Stitch marker, tapestry needle and scissors
• Polyfill*
• 2x 8mm safety eye (not meant for children under 3 y.o.)

Abbreviation used (U.S. terms)
ch: chain
sl st: slip stitch
sc: single crochet
st: stitch
*…*: repeat
inc: 2 single crochet in the same stitch
dec: single crochet 2 stitches together through the front loop only (invisible decrease)

Finished size: approx. 13 cm/5 inches

All pieces are worked through both loops of the stitches and in the round without joining unless stated otherwise in the pattern. It is recommended to use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round. To make it easier, stuff the head and body as you go.

Head and body – in orange make 1
Work in rounds
Round 1. sc 6 in a magic ring
Round 2. inc x6
Round 3. *sc 1, inc* x6
Round 4. *sc 2, inc* x6
Round 5. *sc 3, inc* x6
Round 6. *sc 4, inc* x6
Round 7. *sc 5, inc* x6
Rounds 8-16. sc in each st around

If using safety eyes, insert them between rounds 12-13 approx. 6 visible stitches apart.

Round 17. *sc 5, dec* x6
Round 18. *sc 4, dec* x6
Round 19. *sc 3, dec* x6
Round 20. *sc 2, dec* x6

Stuff the head now. The body is started now, in continuation of the head.

Round 21. sc in each st around
Round 22. *sc 2, inc* x6
Round 23. *sc 3, inc* x6
Round 24. *sc 4, inc* x6
Rounds 25-31. sc in each st around
Round 32. *sc 4, dec* x6
Round 33. *sc 3, dec* x6
Round 34. In BLO, *sc 2, dec* x6
Round 35. *sc 1, dec* x6
Round 36. dec x6

Fasten off, finish stuffing and weave in ends by passing your thread in the front loop only of the remaining stitches.

Beak – in grey make 1
Work in rounds without stuffing
Round 1. sc 6 in a magic ring
Round 2. *sc 2, inc* x2
Round 3. * sc 2, inc 2* x2
Round 4. sc in each st around

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Tail – in orange make 1
Work in rounds without stuffing
Round 1. sc 4 in a magic ring
Round 2. sc in each st around
Round 3. *sc 1, inc* x2
Rounds 4-5. sc in each st around
Round 6. *sc 2, inc* x2
Round 7. sc in each st around

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Wings – in orange make 2
Work in rows
Row 1. ch 5
Row 2. sc 4 down the ch, ch 1, turn
Row 3. sc 4, ch 3, turn
Row 4. sc 2 down the ch, sc 4, ch 1, turn
Row 5. sc 6, ch 3, turn
Row 6. sc 2 down the chain, sc 6, ch 1, turn
Row 7. sc 8, ch 3, turn
Row 8. sc 2 down the chain, sc 8
Row 9. dec along the top of the wing

Fasten off leaving a tail for sewing.

Feet – in grey make 2
Work in rounds without stuffing
Round 1. sc 4 in a magic ring
Round 2. sc in each st around
Round 3. *inc, sc 1* x2
Round 4. sc in each st around
Round 5. sc 1, inc, sc 2, inc, sc 1
Round 6. sc 1, inc x2, sc 2, inc x2, sc 1
Rounds 7-8. sc in each st around
Round 9. sc 4, 3sc in the next st, sc 5, 3sc in the next st, sc 1

Fasten off and sew the top of the foot shut.

Mallard option: DK or 8ply yarn in green, white, yellow, orange, grey and brown

Head and body – rounds 1-18: green, rounds 19-20: white, rounds 21-24: brown, rounds 25-29: [sc 14 in grey, sc 8 in brown, sc 14 in grey], round 30: [sc 15 in grey, sc 6 in brown, sc 15 in grey], round 31: [sc 16 in grey, sc 4 in brown, sc 16 in grey], rounds 32-36: grey
Beak – make in yellow
Tail – make in brown
Wings – make in grey
Feet – make in orange

Assembly

1. If you haven’t used safety eyes, embroider the eyes between rounds 12-13, with approx. 6 visible stitches between them. Sew the beak to the head, between rounds 13-15 and centred between the eyes. For the mallard option, the brown patch on the body is the belly.

2. Using grey yarn, embroider four evenly distributed vertical lines on the top section of the feet.

3. Sew the feet to the front of the body between rounds 28-33.

4. Sew the tail at the back of the body between rounds 31-33.

5. Sew the wings on each side of the body, stitching along the top of the wing only (see picture below).
