Nate the Narwhal

Hello crafters!

Here is the pattern for Nate the Narwhal. I have a soft spot for those marine mammals, I think it’s so interesting that the “horn” on their head is actually a tooth and that males use those to maintain hierarchy within their ranks. I hope you will enjoy making this little critter!

Materials
• DK or 8ply yarn in blue and grey (I like to use the Ricorumi DK*)
3.75 (F) crochet hook*
• Stitch marker, tapestry needle and scissors
Polyfill*
• 2x 8 mm safety eye (not meant for children under 3 y.o.)

Abbreviation used (U.S. terms)
ch: chain
sc: single crochet
st: stitch
*…*: repeat
sl st: slip stitch
hdc: half double crochet
dc: double crochet
BLO: back loop only
inc: 2 single crochet in the same stitch
dec: single crochet 2 stitches together through front loop only (invisible decrease)

Finished size: approx. 18 cm/ 7 inches

All pieces are worked through both loops of the stitches and in the round without joining unless stated otherwise in the pattern. It is recommended to use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round. To make it easier, stuff the body as you go.

Horn – in grey make 1
Work in rounds without stuffing
Round 1. sc 3 in magic ring
Round 2. inc in each st around
Rounds 3-6. In BLO, sc in each st around

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing to the head.



Tail – in blue make 1
Work in rounds without stuffing
Round 1. Starting with a long tail, ch 10, join with a sl st to create a ring
Round 2. sc 12 in the ring
Round 3. *inc, sc 4, inc* x2
Round 4. sc in each st around
Round 5. *2hdc in next st, sc 6, 2hdc in next st* x2
Round 6. sc in each st around
Round 7. *(hdc, dc) in the next st, dc, hdc, sc,
sl st 2, sc, hdc, dc, (dc, hdc) in the next st* x2
Round 8. *hdc2tog, sc 2, sl st 4, sc 2, hdc2tog* x2

Fasten off and sew the top of the tail closed.

Head and Body – in blue make 1
Work in rounds
Round 1. sc 6 in magic ring
Round 2. inc in each st around
Round 3. *sc 1, inc* around
Round 4. *sc 2, inc* around
Round 5. *sc 3, inc* around
Round 6. *sc 4, inc* around
Rounds 7-11. sc in each st around

If using safety eyes, insert them between
rounds 9 and 10.



Round 12. *sc 5, inc* around
Rounds 13-22. sc in each st around
Round 23. *sc 5, dec* around
Rounds 24-26. sc in each st around
Round 27. *sc 4, dec* around
Rounds 28-29. sc in each st around
Round 30. *sc 3, dec* around

Start stuffing the head and body.

Rounds 31-32. sc in each st around
Round 33. *sc 2, dec* around
Round 34. sc in each st around
Round 35. *sc 1, dec* around
Round 36. sc in each st around
Round 37. *dec* around

Finish stuffing the body and fasten off.

Fins – in blue make 2
Work in rounds without stuffing
Round 1. sc 4 in magic ring
Round 2. *sc 1, inc* around
Round 3. *sc 2, inc* around
Round 4. *sc 3, inc* around
Rounds 5-7. sc in each st around
Round 8. *sc 4, inc* around
Rounds 9-11. sc in each st around

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Assembly
1. Sew the tail to the end of the body.

2. Sew the fins on either side of the body between rounds 15 and 22.

3. Sew the horn on top of the head between rounds 4 and 8, with the eyes at equal distance on either side of the horn.
