Crochet Flower – Poppy

Hello crochet friends!

In Australia and New Zealand, the 25th of April is a Remembrance Day commemorating troops arriving in Gallipoli during World War I. Each year on Anzac Day, we wear poppies to commemorate the people who served for our country. This year is my first year spending Anzac Day as an Australian citizen, so I wanted to make it special by sharing with you a free pattern for a poppy flower. Lest we forget.

Materials
• DK or 8ply yarn in red and black (I like to use Ricorumi DK or Paintbox cotton DK*)
3.5mm crochet hook*
• Stitch marker, tapestry needle and scissors
Polyfill*

Abbreviations used (U.S. terms)
ch: chain
st: stitch
sl st: slip stitch
sc: single crochet
hdc: half double crochet
dc: double crochet
tr: treble crochet
inc: increase, sc 2 in the same stitch
[…]: crochet in the same stitch
*…*: repeat instructions

All pieces are worked through both loops of the stitches and in the round without joining unless stated otherwise in the pattern. It is recommended to use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round.

You have the option for either small or large petals for your flower. In either case, make the same centre of the flower.

Option 1:
Small petals – in red make 1
Work in rounds
Round 1. sc 5 in a magic ring
Round 2. [sl st, ch 3, tr, dc, tr, ch 3, sl st] in the same stitch x5 (5 petals)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Option 2:
Large petals – in red make 1
Work in rounds
Round 1. sc 5 in a magic ring
Round 2. inc x5
Round 3. *[sl st, ch 3, tr, dc 2] in the same st, [dc 2, tr, ch 3, sl st] in the next st* x5 (5 petals)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Centre of the flower – in black make 1
Work in rounds
Round 1. *hdc, sl st* x 5 in a magic ring

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Assembly
1. Attach the centre to the middle of the petals with a couple stitches in the middle. Do not sew the edges to keep some depth on the centre.

You are done!
