Free crochet pattern – Summer Starfish

Hello crochet friends!

Have you ever wanted to crochet your very own starfish? With the free amigurumi pattern, now you can! I was inspired by summer on the Great Barrier Reef for this design. I have not been to the GBR in a few years and I really miss it! I hope I’ll be able to bring my boys to Heron Island, one of my favourite place on Earth soon to explore the marine life. In the mean time, I’ll have to make do with crocheting cute critters!

Materials
• DK or 8ply yarn in red (I like to use the Ricorumi DK*)
3.5 mm crochet hook*
• Stitch marker, tapestry needle and scissors
Polyfill*
• Contrasting embroidery thread for the details

Abbreviations used (U.S. terms)
ch: chain
st: stitch
sc: single crochet
BLO: back loop only
inc: increase, sc 2 in the same stitch
dec: single crochet 2 stitches together through the front loop only (invisible decrease)
sc3tog: single crochet 3 stitches together
*…*: repeat instructions

Finished size: approx. 15 cm/ 6 inches

All pieces are worked through both loops of the stitches and in the round without joining unless stated otherwise in the pattern. It is recommended to use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round.

Body – in red make 1
Work in rounds
Round 1. sc 5 in a magic ring
Round 2. sc 3 in each st
Round 3. *sc 1, sc 3 in next st, sc 1* x5
Round 4. *sc 2, sc 3 in next st, sc 2* x5
Round 5. *sc 1, in BLO [sc 5], sc 1* x5
Round 6. *sc 1, in BLO [sc 1, sc 3 tog, sc 1], sc 1* x5
Round 7. *sc 1, sc 3 tog, sc 1* x5

Stuff lightly.

Round 8. *sc 3 tog* x5

Fasten off and weave in ends by passing your thread in the front loop only of the remaining stitches.

Arms – in red make 5
Work in rounds without stuffing
Round 1. attach yarn to the leftover FLO from round 4, sc 5, continue on the leftover FLO from round 5, sc 5
Rounds 2-4. sc in each st around
Round 5. *sc 3, dec* x2
Rounds 6-9. sc in each st around
Round 10. *sc 2, dec* x2
Rounds 11-13. sc in each st around
Round 14. *sc 1, dec* x2
Round 15. sc in each st around

Fasten off leaving a long tail and weave in ends by passing your thread in the front loop only of the remaining stitches. Using the leftover tail, sew running stitches to either side of the arm to shape it. Weave in the starting threads.

Assembly

Optional: embroider French knots along the arms and the body of your starfish.

You are done!
