Hello crochet friends!
I am super excited and proud to finally be able to show you my finished Lord of the Rings blanket! I started this project a very long time ago, in March 2016, after I discovered graphghans. What are graphghans? It’s a portemanteau between graph and afghan, and it describes an afghan blanket made from a graph. There are many stitches you can use to make a graphghan, one of the most popular is the corner to corner stitch (c2c), which is worked diagonally. For this blanket however, I wanted something more textured and neater (some of the colour changes are hard to keep clean with c2c). I decided to use a bobble stitch instead, and I explain how the graph is made with this technique in a photo tutorial.
To finish up the blanket, I joined each square using a whip stitch. I then made a very simple border using a row of sc (with 3sc in each corner) and a row of crab stitch (it’s pretty much a reverse single crochet stitch). After a wash and a dry to relax the stitches and even it out, my blanket is finally finished!
I thought it would be fun to give you some numbers about this project so I’ve compiled a list of stats. If there is anything I’ve forgotten and you’d like to know, feel free to send me a message and I’ll add it!
- Number of days since start: 2008 days
- Number of bobbles: 14,400
- Total number of stitches: 103,448
- Total weight of yarn: 3.3 kg
- Total meterage: 933,900 meters (933.9 km!!)
- Size: 135 cm x 135 cm (53 inches x 53 inches)
I’m so glad this blanket is finally finished, it moved house with us twice (including interstate from Queensland to Victoria) and stayed unfinished through the birth of both my babies! If you’d like to make a LOTR graphghan of your own (hopefully it won’t take you 5 years to finish 🤣), I’ve combined all the graphs in a PDF file that you can download by clicking the button below!
Oh my goodness! I remember seeing these blocks years ago, well done you! I bet you are soooo happy to have this finished!
It has been such a long time coming this blanket! I am definitely very happy that it is finally done!
